Described in 1993 and found growing near Lake Toba in northern Sumatra, this is the form with larger flowers that feature light green backswept segments with darker veins and a bright orange-red rough textured lip with an extended tongue-like appendage. They are about 3 inches in spread and can be produced in small batches almost any time of the year, especially once the plant has several mature growths. These plants have flowered for the first time while still only a few inches tall but are producing taller growths aiming for an ultimate height of about 12 inches They are covered in small brown fuzz all over the plant and buds as is normal for members of the Nigrohirsute group. Keep the plant in a small pot for its size and only transplant when new roots are forming on new growth. Water regularly with slight drying in between and provide filtered bright light. You can grow this one mounted if you are willing to water more often. It is an excellent way to keep the root system happy and more exposed as occurs in nature. Due to the elevation this orchid comes from in the tropics, it prefers cool to warm temperatures but not hot ones, so not a good choice to summer outdoors in hot summer locations, but otherwise a thing of wonder and beauty.
