Slipper Orchid Collection No. 3 (3 select plants in bud)
Very Limited Supply – One of this collection per Customer! This is a great way to introduce yourself to the wonderful, easily grown, long lasting slipper orchids, or Paphiopedilums. This breeding line features beautiful to bizarre flowers set on erect stems above beautifully variegated foliage. This breeding line started way back in 1900 when two wild species from SE Asia Paph. callosum and Paph. lawrenceanum were crossed together to create Paph. Maudiae. We have a plant that is a division many times over, of one the original plants from that cross done over 120 years ago. It blooms for us several times per year and attests to the fact that if you care for them, the slipper orchids can last a lifetime and beyond. The breeding lines descended from this original cross are often called “Maudiae Types” because they share the beautiful foliage, and very long lasting flowers, normally held singly, but lasting for two to even up to five months in perfect condition. But the look has been taken in many directions, offering endless possibilities. Over time, the plants will form clumps that can produce several flowers at once. Due to the huge mix of species now in their genes, this group flowers at any time of the year as soon as a new fan of leaves matures, so you don’t have to wait long to see flowers, especially once the plant has produced several fans of leaves. Cloning is not a viable option with Paphiopedilums, so every plant is raised from seed. This helps explain the profusion of named hybrids out there. The plants you will receive are seedlings out of the crosses illustrated, and the colors and patterns will resemble the example photos, but there will be natural variation as each plant is unique. In this grouping you will receive one plant that typicaly produces darker flowers with heavy spotting on the petals, and one that has lighter, clearer colors with heavy spotting and a marbled pouch lip, and one that is entirely green and white, with no purple in the flower at all. All plants are individually potted in 3.5” square pots in lower spike to flower in a few week’s time. It can take up to two weeks just for each individual flower to fully open once the spike has reach its final height, then they will last for months in perfect condition. These orchids like medium light levels and regular watering without total drying in between. The better you soak the media in the pot, the longer it will take for them to dry out in between. About every two years they should be repotted into new mix, a kind that will offer good drainage, but not dry too quickly. Big clumps can be divided, but only once you can have several fans of leaves with each portion. We think you will enjoy this mix of crosses made by the artful hand of our good friend Graham Wood outside of Hilo, Hawaii. But hurry, this is a very limited offering!
