Cymbidium Spark Sprite ‘Sparky’ (5.5” pot blooming size)
New! This very unusual new hybrid received an Award of Distinction when first introduced in Australia. We are happy to be able to offer it for the first time to our online customers. It is warmth tolerant, by way of being 50% Cym. canaliculatum, a native Australian species, but also compact growing and cold tolerant, having Cym. floribundum as a grandparent. The plants have unusually prominent round pseudobulbs and stiff arching leaves that are shorter than typical Cymbidiums, giving them a rather artistic look even when not in bloom. Plants are primarily winter blooming, with upright spikes of many 2 inch flowers that have purple splotches over a bronze background and a white lip splotched with a brighter tone of purple. Fully mature plants can produce many spikes at once, totaling one to two hundred flowers! Cymbidiums like larger, deeper pots due to their terrestrial nature and large root systems. The mix should combine typical orchid bark with compost to create a more nutrient rich blend. Plants like water and can sit in a saucer or tray of water while actively growing. They can tolerate direct sun in the morning, or bright diffused light all day and will flower under LED lights as well. This variety is very temperature tolerant and can take summer heat outside, and would likely benefit from some chilly nights in fall to help initiate flower spikes, so could stay outside until the first frost of freeze is predicted. It is supposed to flower even if kept warm year round, but we can’t confirm this from experience since our greenhouse is in the 50’s at night in winter. These have all been stepped up and established now into 5.5" pots, but we are still offering them for less than some vendors are selling the same plants in 4" pots. Hurry as our supply is nearly out!
