Dendrobium smillieae (3.5” pot near blooming size)
Note - large plants - may require additional shipping charge Sometimes known as the “Bottlebrush Orchid,” this fascinating species from Australia and New Guinea blooms with dense clusters of non-resupinate (lip upwards) flowers from bare, mature stems in any season of the year, but most commonly winter into spring. Each cluster of blooms can have 50 or more small flowers that are a combination of white, pink and dark green. Each cane will produce blooms for several years, so that older plants will put on a spectacular show. Canes range from 12 inches to as much as 36 inches on robust growths, and the plants are always adding new canes on a regular basis. Leaves drop off the canes after they are about a year old, and then they are ready to flower! Den. smillieae (syn. Den. smilliae) will grow in a range of conditions with a preference for somewhat filtered light in summer and bright light in winter. During the warmer months of the year, water on a regular basis with only minimal drying in between, then give less water in winter into spring. It is a warm grower and does not require a chill in winter to flower, but is tolerant of temperatures in the mid-50’s at night during that season. These are robust, healthy plants in 3.5” pots whose current largest growths are blooming size but still leafy, so could begin to flower in 12 to 18 months or less.
