Rhyncattleanthe Hsinying Fancy Gold ‘Ching Hua’ (3.5” pot blooming size)
New! So little new Cattleya breeding is happening in America these days. This is a beautiful new release from Ching Hua Orchids in Taiwan. They are located in an ideal orchid growing area known as Hsinying and have been taking the best of our American Cattleya tradition to the next step over the past decade or so. In this case we have a delightfully compact plant with flowers more reminiscent of the large flowered standard sized plants. Gorgeous golden yellow blooms with bright red highlights in the lip and a small red tip on the end of the segments are coming in two’s and three’s even on rather tiny plants. We have grown a previous release from this cross called Rth. Fancy Gold ‘October Fireworks’ which eventually grew to about 10 inches in height with flowers exceeding four inches in spread. We can’t be sure this new version will become as large since it is starting to bloom while so small, but we do think the plants will grow a couple inches taller at least and therefore while in the “mini” range right now, will mature as compact growers. Quite a few of these already have two leads while still in a 3.5” square pot, so that bodes well for the possibility of nice specimen plants in just a few years. While the main bloom season will be summer into late fall, we can’t rule out blooms at other times as well given the species in the background. Typical “cattleya culture” of bright light (natural or LED lights), regular watering but with drying in between to promote new and healthy roots, and light feeding while in active growth will produce rewarding results.
