Myrmecatavola Tiger Lily (3.5" net pot seedling)>
Inset image shows the first to bloom from our remake. This is our remake of a great hybrid originally introduced by H&R Nurseries of Hawaii in 1998. We have kept a couple plants from that original batch and they are among our favorite orchids, seemingly always in bloom. The photos are from some of these plants when still young. Now they are impressive specimens with tall spikes of up to a dozen 3.5 to 4 inch flowers. We tried to “sib cross” them, but as with many “Schombo” hybrids, they are difficult breeders. So we went back to the original parents, which are Bc. Richard Mueller x Mpc. tibicinis and finally had success. While ours may vary slightly from the original, they should possess many of the same attractive qualities. Our Bc. Richard Mueller was a virus free division of the ‘Orchidheights,’ AM/AOS clone and our Mcp. tibicinis is a seedling that originated as a pairing of two of the best clones that H&R Nurseries had. These will bloom young, on plants only 6 inches or so tall with a couple flowers per spike, but as they mature, they will test the limits of “compact” and top out close to 12 inches tall, with many flowers per spike, borne on each new growth. They will have a slightly wavy star shape and open red or orange, then gradually mature to sunny yellow, usually with an attractive spotty lip. The plants themselves are neat growers and clump forming with fairly narrow stiff pseudobulbs and leaves. Quantities are limited, so two per customer maximum, please..
