Laeliocatanthe Newberry Lava Burst (3.5” pot seedlings)
Fresh batch available! The original Lcn. Newberry Lava Burst was made by Gene Crocker of Carter & Holmes Orchids and registered in 2005. Marble Branch Farms was the first to receive an AOS award for a plant from the cross (shown above), which went on to receive 11 more flower quality awards, 5 cultural awards and an Award of Quality for the cross. We tried doing self and sibling crosses from the original batch, but like many “Schombo” hybrids it is likely sterile or at least highly reluctant as a parent. So, we have remade the cross ourselves by going back to our versions of the parents used in the original, Ctt. Rojo x L. undulata. Finally our batch of seedlings is ready for sale, growing in 3.5” pots and likely 2 years from first flowering. While we can’t guarantee every plant will be as good as the ‘Marble Branch,’ AM/AOS clone, they should all have wonderful slightly twisty lacquered red to red-orange flowers on strong spikes held above the foliage. Many will feature amethyst purple ovaries like our awarded plant for an unusual contrast. They will be neat, comparatively compact growers, though the spike length will vary somewhat from one to the next. Flowering is typically in late winter or earliest spring, varying slightly with your specific growing conditions. They last easily two months and often longer and are always worth the wait as they plants gradually become showy specimens. A must have if you missed out on the original batch from a decade ago! These are getting larger fast so we have raised the price slightly in response.
