New! Spathoglottis kimballiana is an attractive terrestrial orchid species from Borneo. It produces small round pseudobulbs near the surface each producing several long attractive leaves that resemble a palm seedling. From spring to fall, long wiry inflorescences arise from the base of the plant and produce a succession of large yellow flowers with some fine red speckles on the lip. Mature plants can be in bloom for months. Grow this orchid more like a houseplant, giving it plenty of water and food year round, and warm and bright conditions. It would do well in a south window in winter and outside on the patio with only slight shade in the summer. We offer vigorous seedlings in 3.5 inch pots that could begin blooming within the year. As they mature they should be moved to larger, deeper pots (those more typical for houseplants) to accommodate the vigorous roots, using a typical terrestrial orchid mix, or soil less mix rather than standard orchid bark. If you live in South Florida you can grow this orchid outside in full sun!
