Epidendrum stamfordianum (select dark form x self) (4" pot blooming size

Product Description

Epidendrum stamfordianum grows from Mexico to Venezuela on large mossy limbs in seasonally dry forests where it can make impressive displays when in bloom. It is unusual in that the bloom spikes arise directly from the rhizome at the base of a mature growth rather then from the top of the pseudobulb. Mature plants will send up multiple branched inflorescences up to two feet long, with many intricate and beautifully colored flowers. While the background color is typically green, with small purple dots, these seedlings are the result of selfing a richly patterned dark form (see photo) that originated with Tom Fennell of the once famous Orchid Jungle in Miami, FL.
Please Note: Our remaining plants are a mix of mounted, basket grown and potted. Unless you specify in the "Comments" section when checking out, we will select the best looking plant we have available regardless of the growing method.
Culture tips: This species is most happy in a basket or on a mount, with well draining medium and some moss to hold a bit of moisture. It will continue to grow fine for the time being in the pot we sell them in if attention is paid to NOT overwater the plants. It dislikes disturbance, so we recommend stepping it up, when the time comes, by simply slipping these plants into a basket that is larger than the pot. When well grown (but not fussed over) Epi. stamfordianum can eventually become a magnificent specimen that will offer many long lasting spikes of fragrant flowers each late winter/early spring, with occasional spikes at other times as well. Water and fertilize less in late fall/early winter, but don’t leave the plants completely dry, since they still collect considerable nightly dew in their natural habitat.
